Model UN

Model United Nations is one of the clubs here at Savannah Country Day School. What is it? It’s a club where we have meetings to discuss possible conferences we might attend, and vote on which one we will attend. Model UN is an interactive club where students worldwide engage in conferences to better their public speaking skills and overall understanding of international politics. Back in October, the Model UN club took 12 students to the Georgia Tech Model UN conference, one of the most prestigious conferences in Georgia. At the conference, our students participated in two days of debate and collaboration with other students from different high schools around Georgia. The GTMUN conference is highly competitive, and because of this, our students must make a tremendous effort to attempt to receive an award at this conference. We even had two of our students - Nicolas Chiozza and Andrew Semones - attend an all-Spanish assembly, where they were required to speak in Spanish for the duration of the conference. At the end of the conference, we had only one student win an award; Ramon Barboa won the Honorable Mention in the World Health Organization for Honduras. The Model UN team plans to attend Kennesaw State University’s Model UN Conference at the end of February and early March. Overall, Model UN not only benefits the student as somebody who seeks knowledge, but the Model UN trip was a great bonding experience for the students who went. The Model UN team is led by Mr. Owens, who has been pushing for us to look at bigger and better conferences as well. He told us about conferences such as The University of Chicago and Boston University, extremely competitive conferences that would test our abilities to the fullest. The Model UN club is open to all students who are interested in bettering their skills when it comes to communicating and people skills. The Model UN club is excited for the second semester, and anyone who may be interested in joining the club!
