Female Athlete of the Issue: Charlie Hawkins
Written by: Emily Grace James
The female athlete of this addition is Charlie Hawkins. Charlie is a Sophomore. This year is her second year playing on the JV volleyball team and Varsity basketball team. Charlie has been playing basketball since third grade. Along with SCDS basketball Charlie also plays on an AAU basketball team. Charlie's biggest role model in the sport is her dad. Her dad was a collegiate basketball player for Ole Miss. For Charlie, basketball is a family sport, and playing with her brothers and dad is how she found the love for the sport. Charlie’s favorite part about basketball is getting to play all of the different positions. Charlie also enjoys the hardships of coming together as a team and trying to pull ahead when they are losing. Charlie believes that the hardest part of basketball is learning about your teammates, and how they differ from you. She believes that confidence, determination, and perseverance are all qualities that it takes for her and her team to succeed.
Motivation also plays a key role in winning. Charlie said that when needing to win, you need to block out the outside noise of the crowd, and take a deep breath (“and the motivation of wanting to beat your friends helps”).
Valuable lessons Charlie has learned from basketball are: time management, hard work, and the value of teamwork.. Charlie’s favorite memories are winning a basketball game on her birthday, and having to play with only three players on the court because everyone fouled out.
