Girls Basketball

Lady Hornets basketball led by Coach Joe Nero and Assistant Coach Eileen Sullivan are currently 2-0 on the season. The hornets have 3 seniors this year, Ally Mccray, Feriby McCorkle, and Mims Semones, and they are all looking to have an amazing senior season. This season was a rocky start for the hornets. The girls received some unexpected news about a change in this year's coaching staff two days before their first scrimmage of the season. New to SCDS staff, Joe Nero, was hired to step in as Head Varsity Coach in place of previous Coach, Kenny Conroy. Coach Nero’s goals for this season as head coach consist of building a culture within the program that players are proud to be a part of. One of his main goals is to win, but also develop well rounded athletes for future seasons and other sports.
Coach Nero says the qualities he believes an effective coach must have are “strong communication, balance of toughness, tenderness, and leading by example.” Coach Nero was the boys assistant varsity coach before he was promoted. He worked with the boys throughout the summer, so he is continuing as their assistant coach while also coaching the girls. Nero has very quickly become a vital part of the basketball program at Country Day within his first year here. Nero says that coaching girls is very different from coaching guys because “girls are better at understanding what’s asked of them immediately while guys need to avoid selfishness.” He also says that “girls play as a team more naturally while guys have to be taught.”
Not only does he like to win, he likes to have fun. He wants to show that in a very uncertain time we carry out excitement and that means showing up to practice, happy to be there. He says “The learning process on both ends has been a good new challenge”. Come out and support girls basketball this year!
