An Inside Look: Mock Trial

Written by: Ander Renelt

Mock Trial is one of this school’s most hyped sports, and this year the team is going to live up to that hype. Last year the Mock Trial team was split into two JV and Varsity teams of sorts, allowing most Mock Trial hopefuls to grow their skills for next year. This year, those skills are being put to the test, as there is only one Mock Trial team, and we are playing to win. That’s right, I’m a part of the state’s premier Mock Trial team, and I’m here to give you the inside scoop on how our team prepares for the greatest sports event on earth. Okay, maybe “sport” is a bit of a stretch, but entertain me for a little bit longer.

Before even receiving the case, attorney hopefuls study for an extra month or two to practice objections and writing a compelling argument. Once the case is released we spend another month or two carefully studying the case to develop our argument. After a long season of practices the Mock Trial team finally gets to compete against other schools to prove their dominance and annoy the other team with so many relevance objections you’ll start thinking that your statements are irrelevant too. I'm only joking of course, but there are a lot of objections thrown around during the competition.

One reason for the Mock Trial team’s historical success is our team spirit. The team’s members are always ready to practice at any time, and we are ready to do any role our team requires. Every team member enjoys Mock Trial and considers it to be the best thing about school. In fact, Finn Smith says that “Mock Trial is life”.

This year the Mock Trial team is already weeks ahead of last year’s pace. So with no signs of slowing down the Mock Trial team is going to rock the courtroom this year and secure that glorious state championship.
