Female Athlete of the Issue: Caroline Semones

Written by: EG

Caroline Semones is a Junior here at Savannah Country Day. This year she swam for our varsity swim team. Caroline started to swim at the age of five. She then took a break and continued her career at the start of freshman year. Caroline has also competed with her club team, GCAT, for six years. The reason she began swimming again was because of her sister. Her sister swims at Savannah Christian and inspired Caroline to pick up swimming again. Caroline believes that the hardest part about swimming is the mental aspect. “Being able to try and gain a lead when behind can be a struggle, and trying to pick yourself up after a bad meet or event can be challenging.” Caroline said, “swimming is a lot harder than it looks and that you cannot compare yourself to other athletes or get down on yourself. Even though you are on a team swimming is a mental sport, and if you do badly there is no one to blame but yourself. All you can do is stay positive and try to do better in your next race.” Aside from being a swimmer, Caroline is also a swim coach. Caroline coaches for the Isle of Hope Sharks. Her favorite memory from coaching is when her team beat their rivals, and all of the kids pushed Caroline into the pool. Out of all of the events in swimming Caroline’s favorites are the 50-meter freestyle and the 50-meter breaststroke, and her least favorite event is the 100-meter butterfly. Caroline’s favorite swim coach has been Crystal Wolk because she knows what she is doing and is very encouraging in and out of the pool, and Caroline’s favorite professional swimmer is Alex Walsh. Caroline’s career has made her this issue’s athlete of the issue.
