Going For Gold: The Mock Trial Gold Teams' Journey to State

Written by: Ander Renelt

The Mock Trial Gold Team is on the path to greatness after the team’s recent victory, with hopefully more to come now that the team has advanced to regionals. As some of you may know February 1st was the county competition for Mock Trial, and you may have heard that the Mock Trial Gold Team won 2nd place overall against about 14 other teams, only being beaten out by the more experienced SCDS Green Team. The Gold Team also won 2 “best attorney” awards and a “best witness” award at the competition.

Here’s how it went down: the team gathered in front of the courthouse and waited for the doors to open at 8:00am. The first case was supposed to start at 8:30, but like most things at the mock trial competition - it was delayed. By how much? Two hours. Our plaintiff side (who were going first) had to wait in the courtroom for a very long time. Despite this setback, our first game against Wayne County went swimmingly and we managed to pull out a win.

Our next trial was also delayed, but that didn’t stop our defense from beating BC. BC’s attorneys were strong, but ours were stronger, and we managed to rack up a lot of points by destroying BC’s witnesses on cross examination. For our third and final trial the defense was up again, and with the stakes high they had to deliver. In most people’s eyes we just managed to squeeze out a final win, with our opponent’s attorneys asking an eyewitness to a car crash about washing machines, and our witnesses making their attorneys look silly in general. However, the judges disagreed, and determined that we lost. We respect their opinion, but it didn’t end up mattering anyway since we advanced to regionals.

Our next competition will be February 22nd in Macon, meaning by the time you are reading this regionals will have already concluded. As of writing this, we have one more practice before “game day”. The Mock Trial Gold Team has prepared hard and devoted a lot of time into this competition, so I am confident that no matter what we will put up a fight.
