Editor of the Issue: Carter Herman
Written by Ian Rogers
As homework for exam season stacks up and the seasonal slump increases, it’s easy to fall behind in extracurriculars to nurture academic classes. Yet, this is not the case for Junior Carter Herman. As a loyal member of The Buzz since his freshman year, he has consistently been timely in delivering his articles with expertise care, and experienced writing. This quarter, he has written 3 articles for our issue, including a Russian book review of Alexander Pushkin's Eugene Onegin, an opinion piece on the Mike Tyson vs. Jake Paul fight, and an insightful teacher interview on everyone’s favorite KG (Kevin Goldberg).
In an interview with Carter, my first question was why he joined The Buzz. To this, he answered that he joined The Buzz his freshman year for an opportunity “to improve writing and receive constructive criticism from those more experienced”, adding that he also wanted the chance to express himself through words given how much of an “opinionated person” he is (his words not mine!). Secondly, I asked him about his favorite article from his Buzz career. While I had a sneaking suspicion, his answer was an article from last year about Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s relationship when news first got out about it. He said, “The article received some mixed reactions, but generally it seemed to provoke some vivid feelings about those who read it”. He added that he always loves a chance to write something involving football or pop culture controversy; his article on Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce was a mix of both, so his consistent effort was especially clear in this piece. In his most recent addition to The Buzz, as Feriby and I were editing articles, his book review on Russian Literature piqued my interest, so I figured it was only right to ask him what brought about the idea. When I asked this, Herman stated that he is an avid reader and “felt that I should broaden my horizons, so I started reading some of the classics of other cultures”. Yet, he didn’t stop at Russian, he has also read some French and Japanese literature, saying that Russian stuck out to him. I think I speak for the average human when I say that reading in different languages is not for everyone. As the full-time student with many extracurriculars that Carter is, it is extremely impressive that he had much time to complete a read like this one.
Carter is a glimpse into the genius students that make up The Buzz. He is thoughtful, educated, and willing to learn. Without him, The Buzz would not be the same. Thank you Carter for your consistent contribution to our team.
