SCDS Girls’ Basketball Finishes as Region Runner-Up, Battles Hard in State Tournament

The Savannah Country Day girls’ basketball team had an outstanding season, demonstrating remarkable growth, teamwork, and resilience under the leadership of head coach Joe Nero and assistant coach Eileen Sullivan. After finishing as region runner-up, the team entered the state tournament ready to compete at the highest level.

In the first round, the girls secured an impressive victory over Aquinas, showcasing their skill and determination. In the Sweet Sixteen, the team faced North Cobb Christian in a hard-fought battle. After falling behind in the first half, the team rallied with a strong second-half comeback but ultimately fell just short in a close finish.

From the start of the season, the girls displayed unwavering dedication to their team and craft, and their commitment was evident on the court. The addition of Coach Nero brought fresh energy and strategy, allowing the team to elevate their skills, strengthen their bond, and refine their sportsmanship. As a result, the girls not only secured an exceptional record but also established themselves as a force within the region.

A standout moment of the season came in December when the girls competed in an away tournament, emerging undefeated and claiming the championship title alongside the SCDS boys basketball team. The team’s ability to perform at all levels solidified their reputation and foreshadowed the success that followed throughout the season.

This year’s senior class—Ally McCray, Mims Semones, and Feriby McCorkle—was instrumental in leading the team, bringing years of experience, leadership, and passion to the court. Their dedication to SCDS basketball left a lasting impact, serving as an inspiration for their younger teammates.

Beyond the senior leadership, the junior and sophomore players stepped up in big ways, proving the depth and talent of the team’s roster. With a deep bench and strong team connection, the Hornets showcased their ability to play as a cohesive unit, allowing different players to shine in key moments throughout the season.

Although their state tournament run came to an end, the Hornets have much to be proud of. This season was defined by hard work, growth, and camaraderie, proving that SCDS girls’ basketball is a program on the rise. With a solid foundation set by this year’s team, the future looks bright for the Hornets as they continue to build upon their success.
