Shooting

Shooting, a very popular pastime in the south, is the sport of determining who is most skilled with a shotgun. Shooting requires focus, patience, hand-eye coordination, and stillness. Shooting tournaments last around 9 hours and the school team has to attend 3 qualifiers to qualify for state. The school team is grades 5-12. Shooting tournaments consist of Skeet, Trap, and Sporting Clays. In this year’s SCDS qualifier on September 8, 2024, the country day shooting team placed 2nd. They competed against Calvary Day school, St. Vincent’s, Benedictine military school, Savannah Christian, Pinewood, and Bullock County high school.
When interviewing second year captain Chase Buerger, he explained his responsibilities as a captain and also his passion for shooting. Chase has been shooting since the sixth grade for the Country Day team. He is one of the most talented shooters on the team. As captain, he organizes equipment for shooting tournaments and leads the team through thick and thin, comforting his teammates after a bad shot. “People should do shooting because it's extremely equal, anyone can do it and be equally talented. It’s nice being outdoors and catching up with friends. Shooting is not too serious and is very participant driven meaning you’ve got to do it to enjoy it”, Chase explained when asked why people should join the shooting team.
Our Hornet shooting team is very talented and has had a past few years filled with accomplishments. They placed second in the nation in 2021 and 2023. They won the shooting state championship in 2022. The team is coached by Eric Haas and has been for four years. Go out and support our Country Day shooting team at future tournaments, and if you have any interest in shooting, don’t hesitate to join the team! Go enjoy the farmer tans, mullets, but don’t forget your ear plugs!
