Artist of the Issue: Mary Margaret Caroll

Written by Tennyson Fitzgerald

Recently, The Buzz talked to Mary Margaret Carroll 25’, a student in 450 advanced art portfolio with Ms. Duthu who is experimenting with a new art medium. In art portfolio students have the complete freedom to generate and then present an idea to Ms.Duthu, after her approval they have two weeks to bring their ideas to completion. Mary Margaret has been approved to work with fabrics to design and create a dress.

“Sewing is one of the new mediums I am experimenting with. My grandma taught me how to sew when I was younger but I never learned how to sew a dress.” Mary Margaret says, “I am making a “practice dress” right now, learning how to sew, create my own pattern, and even sew a zipper. I am wrapping up this dress now and I have learned a lot, so I should be able to quickly make the dress again with my real fabric!”

Mary Margaret found inspiration in Savannah's “Junk 2 Funk” fashion show, where designers create fashion masterpieces with found objects. She explains, “ It was always so fascinating to me to see how students would create unique pieces without using fabric! I decided I would use fabric for my project but I was definitely inspired.”

While Mary Margaret is experienced with many mediums, in the past, she has most enjoyed collaging. She says, “I did a lot of collage work last year, one of my pieces was featured as the cover of the amanuensis. I think it’s really cool to collage but especially with vintage magazines to make cool pieces”

Mary Margaret's love of art sparked when she was a little girl learning from her grandmother. “I have always loved art and started painting when I was little with my grandma.” Mary Margaret shares, “She taught me how to paint and draw, through art, art we got to spend so much time together”

Mary Margaret's recent project has prompted her to think about her future, “ I have always loved fashion and dreamed of being a fashion designer when I was little. I’m not sure if that’s still what I want to do now, but no matter what I am sure that I will use my creativity whether in marketing, architecture, or graphic design.” she says.

We look forward to seeing what Mary Margaret's artistic talents create next!
