Mock Trial Overview
Written by: Carter Herman
In recent years, Mock Trial has become more prominent in schools across the country, with estimations ranging that nearly 5,000 schools added new teams. Taking that into consideration, that explains why this year's Mock Trial competition was the most challenging in recent memory. The Savannah Region (region 14) is the largest region in the state beating out the likes of Atlanta and Macon regions—it’s important to note that Atlanta is divided into several regions. The Savannah region hosts a mix of 14 private and public schools throughout the Low-Country region. The case file for mock trial comes out in mid-October giving teams nearly five months to prepare for the competition. Mock Trial is no light commitment, with a minimum of four hours of practice a week.
This preparation over the past five months was on full display at the February 1st competition. Where the Savannah Country Day School Green Team took home first place in the competition, with a bevy of solo award winners. The plaintiff side was led by Theo McGuirk—who won best attorney award for the first round, Parker Hall, and Emily Moretz. On the defense side Mollie Macfadyen won best attorney for the two rounds she played in, she was supported by Carter Herman and Ellie Northup. Additionally, the defense’s formidable reputation was complemented by Connor Umbel’s win for best witness in the second round, as Dr. Tony Friedman. In the past two and a half weeks after the first competition. This team has worked to refine their skills to prepare for the Districts competition in Macon. The team looks forward to continued success in this competition and hopes to make a run for a State Title leading a resurgence for the Mock Trial team, as the last State Championship dates back to the 90’s. Looking even forward ahead, while this team has enjoyed great success with the recent limitations placed on under class mans participation, has created a team which is dominated by upperclassmen. Meaning the team will once again open up participation for underclassmen. So if you have any questions, swing by Mr. Muller's room or look for a team member.
