As the fall season unfolds, the Savannah Country Day School cross country team is making impressive strides on the trails. With notable performances and significant improvements, our athletes are showcasing their dedication and talent. Here’s a roundup of the standout highlights from the season's halfway point.
Relay Champions
A major highlight was our coed relay team—Charlie Pope, Kent Burnett, Walker Price, Aarya Patel, and Ansley Pedigo—who triumphed at the SCDS relay. They covered 20.5 miles in just two hours, clinching first place by a narrow margin over Jeff Davis High School, with Richmond Hill High School following in third. This victory set an early high standard for the season!
Gator Invitational Success
At the Gator Invitational on September 8, the girls' team finished second out of 13 schools. Aarya Patel and Ansley Pedigo placed 8th and 11th, respectively. The boys’ team also showed resilience, finishing 6th overall, with Charlie Pope and Kent Burnett securing 7th and 10th places.
Long County Meet
In the Long County meet, every athlete improved their times from the season opener. Madison Bueno excelled, shaving over 5 minutes off her previous best, while Nate Pope cut nearly 2 minutes from his time. Ansley Pedigo and Aarya Patel finished 11th and 13th, with Charlie Pope leading the boys in 14th. The girls’ team secured 5th place out of 16 schools.
Stinger Invitational Triumph
Most recently, the girls’ team finished 2nd at the Stinger Invitational. They initially tied for second with Savannah Christian, but Maddy Bueno clinched the spot by outrunning their 6th runner. The boys’ team placed 9th out of 15 schools, with many runners achieving season-best times.
Consistent Improvement
A standout feature of this season has been the consistent improvement among athletes like Aarya Patel, Ansley Pedigo, SC Gilpin, and others, who have repeatedly bettered their best times.
As the season continues, the SCDS cross country team hopes to send as many runners to the region championship and then the state championship in November. With more races ahead, we look forward to their success. Go, Hornets!
