Movie Review: Hocus Pocus
Written by Madison Beuno
Hocus Pocus is a classic Halloween film that is watched every year. It was released on July 16, 1993, and directed by Kenny Ortega. It stars Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy as the witches and Omri Katz as the teenage boy. Hocus Pocus is about wicked, villainous witches known as the Sanderson sisters who are resurrected by Max, a teenage boy, on Halloween night. It is set in Salem Massachusetts when Thackery Binx figures out his sister was taken by the Sanderson sisters. He confronts them and tries to stop them from taking her youth, but he fails. To punish him, the sister cursed him to live forever as a black cat. Before being hanged, one of the witches casts a spell, saying that they will return after someone lights a Black Flame Candle in the cottage on Halloween Night. After 300 years, the Sanderson sisters are resurrected by Max. On Halloween, Max is forced to go trick-or-treating with his little sister Dani. They stumble upon a house and go in, he lights a black candle and accidentally brings back the Sanderson sisters. They want to steal the lives of the town's children to ensure that they will live forever and have eternal life, but some kids get in their way. I would rate this movie a 9/10. Hocus Pocus is a classic Halloween movie for a reason.
